Frere Hall Inauguration

Frere Hall Inauguration

I am thrilled to announce the launch of a new project in our bid to safeguard rthe physical heritage in Sindh, the Conservation & Rehabilitation of Frere Hall, in Karachi, part of a historic partnership led by Sindh Exploration & Adventure Society, and U S Ambassadors Fund for Preservation of Cultural Heritage. The project has the coordinated support of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation. Appreciating the unique architectural design of the Frere Hall, the project will address the severe damage to the building’s timber work, happening in result of the wear and tear, and also the repeated drastic bomb blasts during the couple of decades at the turn of the century, and rehabilitate the weaknesses resulting from interventions in the historic structure and its setting. The two towers of the building one on account of the fracturing timber support, tilting to go down, and other accumulating dirt and rain water giving rise to botanical growth, which is eating away the stone construction, these need not only the calculating input but the rehabilitation for ensuring longevity. Under the pressure of the usage, the fragile electric supplying conduit has caused many small and large sparks, igniting fires which damaged the timber work, it requires a stable and load designed distribution points and control panel, and provision of the further distribution points, for adjusting the light for all possible events & exhibitions, throughout the premises. For the maximum accommodation and to modernize its visitor accommodations, interpretative displays, and education facilities, an inclusive design process is required to be initiated by inviting participation from local experts and community members. Advancing the long-term sustainability of the city’s town hall, our work at the site underscores its place within the city’s historic urban landscape.
